I truly liked this sentence and add my emphasis:If you cannot always act out of love for the other person, then at least try to remember to act out of respect for yourself.
I believe it takes some living to learn what kind of person you respect...even if that person is yourself.

In response to message posted by plox:I agree. To know thyself is the challange in all things. Before we can learn to respect others we have to learn to respect ourselves. That can often be very hard to do.

That is, if I do not respect my self, I will not believe my intentions, moods, or harsh words have any effect on others.

In response to message posted by plox:That is a large part of it. Another large part of it is that expecially among americans we expect people to respond to situations the exact same way we would. The most common example of this is the man who has an affair and starts accusing his wife of being the one having an affair. If we are doing something then obviously the rest of the world must be doing it as well. If they aren't then we might have to concider the idea that our behavior is at best ill adviced.
I don't know if you have ever noticed, but people who yell when they are in an argument do not know what to do if the other person stays resasonable and never yells back. A lot of times the reason people yell is because they can deal with someone yelling at them a lot easier than they can someone discussing things calmly when they themselves feel so out of control.
But, what is so funny about the whole thing is that though we think the whole world is doing what we are doing when we are the one being wronged we fly off the deep end and act as though our entire world has blown up around us. This horrible cycle could stop if we would all just stop and think every once in a while
