Excellent and thought provoking article...your example (the elderly must die for the young) was a harsh enough one to make anyone think hard before acting on their desires. What stood out was the sense of personal responsibility that goes with making decisions in magical practice. At least for the emotionally mature believers?
Not so long ago, I read where televangelist Pat Robertson was praying, and asking his listeners to pray, for the more liberal judges of the Supreme Court to "retire". He pointed out that they were old and it wouldn't be surprising for them to die.
But...like all Christians, he would bear no feeling of personal responsibility for anything bad happening to those judges, because "it's God's will".
Just one of the differences between Pagans and Christians.

In response to message posted by plox:Your right Plox. I have often said that was my real problem with the Christain Faith. Very little responciblity is placed on the shoulders of the person doing the action.
Prayer isnt really that much diffrent from magicak ritual, expecailly if your catholic. In fact many pagans use prayer beads or Roisery to help with meditative focus during magical ritual. The real diffrence between prayer and magick is that prayer is kind of like a child playing baseball by himself. He throws the ball up and then swings the bat at it hoping he can hit it where he wants it to go. More often than not though he misses. Ritual is more focused. Instead of lofting it up on your own, your using a pitching machine,if you will, You know exactly where the ball is coming from and can see it when you take your swing. It makes your chances of getting it where you want it much better but it is still the same principle, trying to hit the ball.
The Idea that someone could say pray for someones loss of a job or death because its ultimatly in Gods hands is horrific to me. No its not ultimatly in Gods hands. If you hadnt of asked for it then It wouldnt have happened and in so doing you bear the brunt of the responciblity.
There is an old saying in Pagan Circles, As above so below. What we think, we create. What we precieve and concieve will become reality. Even the most staunch of Christains is starting to realize this. So many of the main stream ideas you hear on TV today started out as being magickal practice. Daily visuliation of Goals for instance is a magical practice. I dont know many Christains these days that doesnt use it in one form or another. By thinking about it in a discrpitive way they ultimatly bring about that discription. Visualize yourself hitting the ball. Now swing.
Wishes work the same way. The old saying be careful what you wish for it might come true works on the same principle as the as above so below idea. People do not realize how effective their thoughts and words are in shaping the world. Marketing has this formula they use in fast food restraunts. Make one unhappy customer and he will cost you ten potental and current customers. One mistake upseting one person puts into effect a chain of events you cannot control that works against you. Does this mean we shouldnt make mistakes? No it just means we must be aware of the actions that we take and when our actions lead to something problematic take responciblity for it. It is only through acknowleding that mistake we can change it and in doing so change future outcomes. That ultimatly is the goal of Magick. It is the spiritual development of the soul, formed and developed in responciblity.
