» jerrib - I went to my husband's office once

and set up his files this way (he has no organizational skills) - it lasted a few days!

Folks either do it or they don't. I've seen some very messy piles of paper exactly where an owner knows where they are. Not my style unless I'm running on empty. Takes too long to find anything.

My problem is I don't throw away when I should. I have too many files.

Excellent article.

» Jo Murphy - Computer Filing

I get into the same problem with computer filing.
As an artist I save the most unnecessary images and create a labyrinth of silly littles titles I can't trace. When it comes time to clean up my hard drive I never know what I need and what is just junk. Lately I have spent a lot of time deleting and renaming. Pitty I don't just do it at the time.
It is so easy just to hit save as...I'll think about it later.
I love reading your articles. Organisation is my highest priority but you would never know that.

Great article, Judy!
I have a filing system, but it's not nearly so neat or organized. My computer files, they *are* very organzied and easy to find. My desk and filing cabinets, well, they're not neat, but I can find everything.
Last week my oldest son (age 11) went to my office to find my stash of scotch tape. He was gone a long time. Didn't return with any tape. We were out. The next day when I went to my office, it was totally reorganized. The stacks of books and file folders I had scattered all over my desk, grouped with the different projects I was working on were gone! I couldn't find a thing. I thanked him for cleaning up my office, but I told him that I liked it the way it was, because I could find everything. I couldn't find my thesaurus for two days. He said to me, "How can you work? If I were a writer, my desk wouldn't be as messy as yours." Ah, kids.
As for the rest of the house, he has carte blanche in organizing it. He does a fantastic job, and things are easily found.
Thanks for another good article...Marie

Hey Marie, gosh I have been calling you Rita all along. Sorry about that. smile Your son reminds me of my youngest, we had friends over and had a fire in the burning barrel. The kids were cleaning out their rooms and got over ambitious and decided to 'help' me by burning all the old newspapers. They also burned all my tear sheets from my newspaper column that I had worked on for three years!

I still get a bit 'ticked' when I think about it. smile
