Does anyone know what goes into the different
layers of a lasagna garden. I know compost is
one obviously, but what else?

Julie,

I'm not quite sure what the original method was but I've used the following succesfully.

cover the grass with newspaper, put a layer of manure on, then put shredded leaves on top of that. You can add grass clippings instead of manure. I usually ended up mixing my nitrogen rich and carbon rich sources. Then when ready to plant I either put soil or compost on top. In reality you'd not want to layer it. The nitrogen and carbon need to mix so they can break down. Plus when you get right down to it, nature doesn't layer things so very neatly, yet it makes very nice topsoil. Though not as fast as a good organic farm can

go to www.motherearthnews.com/gardening ask for lasagna gardening. The author of the book has a summary and the recipe (15 pages). Good luck!

!5 pages seems like an awful lot of directions for a really basic process. I haven't looked at the directions, but I would think that 15 pages of directions would be more likely to intimidate rather than reassure people. Gardening isn't that complicated.
