» grnjn1 - Feed the soil let the soil feed the plants
Do you suppose there is a link between disease and the fact that most produce is grown just the opposite of what nature intended.Chemically feed and fertilized, I've been growing my plants the Ruth Stout way for 10 years now, the only twist is I didn't wait for the spoiled hay to break down I started with compost inches of it, with newspaper underneath to kill out grass etc. Mulch Mulch inches of it, went five years with no major weeds the ones that did appear were blow ins and came out like a dream. Watering almost none, I can't recommend this method any higher than I do. No fail for anyone please try.Contact me if you have any questions on this ten year project.-- posted by grnjn1

In response to message posted by grnjn1:I'm not sure if you mean human disease or plant disease. I'm convinced that there is a direct link between using chemical methods and plant disease. Chemical methods stress plants and lead to more insect infestations and disease. Just like when humans are stressed, we get sick more often. As for human disease. There's growing evidence that depletion of the soil is leading to decreased nutrients in the plants themselves, which of course we're eating. Plus, in my mind, the increased amount of suspect chemicals floating around in our environment probably leads to increased health problems. The impression I've had of the news from the EPA lately, is that every time they reassesses a common agricultural chemical, they end up banning or severely restricting it. Perhaps because they never mention when they OK a particular chemical, only when they take it off the shelf.
Finally, the Ruth Stout method. You don't even have to get as complicated as she does with all her layers. I just use leaves and newspapers to start my beds and they're wonderful. I heartily agree with you. I never till anything anymore. I think more people would garden a;and benefit from gardening if they used this easy method.
