» DeborahT - What's wrong with Chemical fertilizers
Mort MatherMy answer comes from studying soil microbiology. Everything we do to the
soil and everything nature does causes changes in the soil microbiology.
When reading a book on the subject I was stricken by the scientists
problem of counting soil microorganisms. As soon as they took a sample
things started changing. When roots move through the soil the
microorganism population changes.
Chemical fertilizer is like a bomb to this population. Many of the
useful jobs they perform are eliminated. The acids that accompany the
fertilizer are something else that the soil life must deal with and to
do that the population changes for the new job--not a job that is
helpful to the growth of plants.
