» Carol Wallace - Great idea! Have you ever seen anything like this drought? I had really begun to thank about rain barrels, as rain water seems so much more beneficial in the garden than hose water, except that, of course we have had nothing to fill it with.I'm beginning to think we gardeners should have a drought event. -- posted by Carol Wallace » DeborahT - drought (what else) My spring veges did fine. I'm not a great broccoli grower, but I had my best year, then summer hit and even my zucs aren't producing. It's been a very depressing summer gardenwise, but I'm going to try more fall crops this year. Perhaps the way to beat the drought is to wait til the fall -- posted by DeborahT » Britt_moe - rainbarrel So, how do you make a rain barrel? Our summergarden here in north-central Fl. was pretty much a BUST too. We are lucky enough to have a longer growing season, so we too are going for the fall garden. The only thing that seems to have survived the drought is our 'bush of 100' cherry tomatoes and as long as you keep picking and watering they keep producing! Also peppers (not the green kind!) jalepenos are doing ok. (nothing like last years!) habenero's are surviving . We are not sure if we need to put down lime, because we are not sure who the culprit for our poor garden is, drought, or overworked soil. We only have a small (20x25 ft) section, but we did prepare the soil last spring mixed in top soil, leaves, fertilizer, and let sit for a month or so before we planted, then started everything with Osmose time-released pellets. But even watering every other day when the dry weather started, we got very little in the way of results. anyone have a suggestion?send to moe@aiservices.com -- posted by Britt_moe » DeborahT - how to make a rain barrel Britt,I've included a drawing and directions on my latest article for making a rain barrel. check it out at http://www.suite101.com/topics/page.cfm/... All of my articles are there. How much organic matter do you have inyour soil. If you have a good, crumbly, black soil, then you probably don't need to lime. You can always check the pH. By adding organic matter, you'll buffer your soil and add food foryour plants at the same time. Don't feel bad, my garden was pretty bad this year also. Deborah -- posted by DeborahT
