Tracy, Good Morning!

Good informative article...should be required reading for all beginning gardeners :+)

One point beginners should keep in mind...Use raised beds if you know you'll be moving house shortly or be in a situation only for a short time.

This way, you can begin gardening almost immediately with only a modest outlay of money especially if the underlying soil is bad.

Prefabricated forms from garden catalogs such as
Gardeners Supply in Burlington, VT can be used and filled with purchased good quality loam or purchased bags of organic compost or soil from a local garden center or farmers' supply. Result: Instant garden with great soil.

When it comes time to move...remove forms and take them with you. Scatter the used soil on the surface.

I suggested this method to a young couple who were temporarily in a wonderful home but one with
almost no underlying soil because of tree roots, compacted clay soil and trash. They were thrilled to have vegetables and herbs their first summer in that home.

Cheers!

In response to message posted by Cercis:

Hi there,

That is also great advice, and a great point too. You can get a bonus out of raised beds, with portability and instant success without too much work. Gardener's Supply Company has excellent products, but I have also noticed raised bed kits springing up all over the place, and you don't even have to spend money if you are inventive- as I am sure many are like myself tight on funds for our gardening habit this year.

I am excited about my next article that I plan to write - companion gardening. Another easy care tip for gardeners who don't want to deal with bugs- let them police themselves....

Well, thanks again for the excellent comments on my third article. Looking forward to spending some more time in the gardening community.
