» MadGardener - Share your results with soil amendments Hi there,I would like to open this discussion up to see what everybody's experience with amendments is. What is your best find for a soil amendment? Is it the leaves from your yard, a product you found on the market, or a secret concoction you made yourself? What gave you the best results? -Tracy - aka - MadGardener -- posted by MadGardener

Tracy and all, Here is another excellent soil link sponsored by the Extension Service at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I am not writing this just because I am from MA! This soil test service has actually been rated as one of the best in the US, and I believe their prices are reasonable. Use this link to read more about soil services and testing in MA. Here is another link for gardeners wanting to read the on-line soils testing brochure or print a pdf file of the brochure. Certainly grist for another discussion is my opinion that the soil test kits that homeowners can purchase are a waste of money and soil testing should be done by Extension soil professionals or reputable companies. Soil testing needs to be exact to be correct and results from the home test kits are too error prone. -- posted by Georgene A. Bramlage

Tracy, This article is a great effort at putting together very important, but very difficult information for the home gardener to comprehend. Wow, that sounds as if I'm in a negative mood this AM...but the fact of the matter is that all great and good gardens whether flower, vegetable or fruit start with a good look and almost fanatic attention to the soil. -- posted by Georgene A.
