» SFApollo - Light & brown leaves

I'm new to orchids (just started w/2) Ctna. Why Not has brown leaves. I assume from the article it is too much light. Should I take the brown leaves off?

Considering my relatively large experience with brown leaves ;), I normally let the leaves stay on till they fall off on their own accord. This is with the hope that any good left in the leaf will be taken up by the plant. The psuedobulb that remains should be left on to help sustain the plant.

Lots of luck

If the brown leaves bother you then you can remove them. I usually trim any old leaves once a week when I water. You need to find out what is causing the leaves to go brown.. old leaves sometimes go brown and drop off but if the leaves that you have are new leaves you need to check things out.

» Elfi - Red spots on leaves and bulbs

I live in Florida and grow my orchids in a screen enclosure. About half a year ago one cattleya started to have red spots on the underside of the leaves, since then about half of my orchids started to get red spots or streaks. I moved some to a shady location but it does not seem to make any difference. Help!!!

Hi,

Just answered your question in another post..
See "RED SPOTS"

Here is what I wrote..

Hello Elfi sorry I missed your posting, and THANK YOU Jojo for finding it.
I believe what you are seeing is the pigmentation in Cattleyas which turn red/purple when they are exposed to bright light. This does not harm them at all, it is a sign that they are getting the light they need. As you see yours is getting ready to bloom. Many times even the flower sheaths will have purple on them. Putting them in the shade will not reduce the red pigmentation that has already occurred. Don't be concerned because it is a good sign.

If you are really worried can you take them to a grower near you to verify that this is correct. With out seeing the plant I am only guessing.

» brady98 - old stems

I bought my first orchid about two months ago, all of the blooms have fallen off. Should I cut of the stem or let it die and fall off? The plant seems very healthy a new leaf has sprouted.

A new bloom started to form at the very tip of the stem but died and now the top 3 inches of the stem has turned brown.

Thanks

Brady
