In response to message posted by Cyok:
That's a tough one. And a reminder that the Internet is only as good at what people have posted on it...that a lot is NOT posted.

Alas, libretti for German and central European operettas are quite hard to find in print as well, at least in the US. Has to do with their infrequency of performance, aside from Merry Widow and Fledermaus. It's not profitable for companies to keep the books or booklets in print, if there isn't demand for them (which ties into whether companies are performing them enough for audiences to want to read the words).

There are a couple of things you can try. The first and probably most successful would be to search the web for dealers in used opera lps and CDs -- if you spot an album with the right title, contact the dealer's customer service people and tell them your purchase would be contingent on the album containing a complete libretto with an English translation. This is important as you cannot assume a recording contains a libretto at all, much less in English (my CD recording of the Kalman does not contain a libretto). Chances are a used set would be affordable especially if it is without big-name leads...and of course you'd now own a recording, too, and not just a libretto. A good source for all kinds of opera & other vocal albums is www.arsantiqua.com

Another way to go about this is to search for dealers in vocal scores or visit library collections of such scores. A singing score will often have English translations though perhaps not spoken dialogue.

Last, and not as crazy as it may sound, is to surf for American or UK opera companies that have performed these works recently. Contact them, and ask if they (a) were selling libretti in connection with the performances and have any to spare, and (b)if not, do they have any good sources for the words that their singers obviously needed to use.

If anyone else has suggestions, please send'em along.

Iris

In response to message posted by Cyok:

JosefeWeinbergerer Ltd in London publish an English translation of 'Gypsy Love' - there are 2 versions available; if you want one close tLehar's's original make sure you get the 'professional' version with book and lyrics translated by AdaCarstairsrs.Kalman'san's 'Gypsy Princess' is also available to buy as a libretto; again, the professional versionNigeligel Douglas is much closer to the original.

Start at http://www.josef-weinberger.weinbergerbe... and follow the lLehar Lehar is publishGlockenlVerlagVeKalmanKalmJosef Weinbergerberger but you can access them both from the above link.

Happy hunting,

Where can I find lyrics to "Komm Ziguane"
(sp?) as well as other famous operetta works?

Is there anything free of cost listed on the net?
Komm Ziguane, I think was written by Kalman but maybe it was Lehar or Strauss. Many thanks for your assistance. Bob H.

» Belfiore - Lehar Libretti

I find myself in the same position as globaladven and Cyok.

Is there a way I can find Lehar's "Das Land des Lachelns" Libretto? I have the EMI/Mattes recording but it does not include one. I think this is a lovely work and deserves to have a published libretto. Last year I was in Germany, and went to a famous music bookstore in Munich, but, alas, no libretto and/or score.

Where do opera companies and singers get theirs?

If anybody knows something, and wants to share, will be greatly appreciated.

Andrés

In response to your recent request, the only place I can think of where you atre likely to find a libretto would be Glocken Verlag. They supply amateur and professional companies with lins and scores. Professional scores sometimes differ from the amateur versions. Hope this is a help for you.
