The only problem with Javascript is that not all browsers can use it, and you have to be careful about what version you are doing the code under.

I've seen a lot of sites use Cookies of late to handle some of this. Of course, there is a great adversion to allowing cookies onto folks machines. (Security and what not)

Recently, on a site I worked on, I used the idea of doing it through a cgi. There are several ways to do it in a cgi program. The basic is that the variables in a form are carried over anyway, so why not use them.
