» Fairdinkum - 60 ways to health

As I am temporarily housebound again, I think of the walking I should be doing and how a sluggish and protesting, ageing body feeds a sluggish mind. So, while sluggishly relaxing over today's Sunday papers, I lock onto a 2-page article which bears the above titles. Crikey...exercises within my current range and less excuses not to do. smile

Arthritis etc? Use roll-on deodorant not spray - works the wrist flexor and extensor muscles (43), lace-up shoes works the thumb and finger flexor muscles and re-doing laces works the leg muscles (20).

When I'm out and about...pace up and down the platform when the train is late (56), dodge-walk passersby burns 26Kj a minute and uses abductor and adductor muscles (27) etc etc

I'm actively thinking about the extra activity now. smile

Jeff,

It's not a big stretch to go from actively thinking to putting thoughts into action, although I may be the last person who ought to be offering said advice.

Slow but sure...that's how I'm proceeding and have actually come to enjoy my acitivity time each day--more so at the end of it than the beginning. : )

You can do it. (Oh, did anyone hear Tony Little's voice as they read that?)

Hi Deb

Tony Little? I dunno about that but I have relaxed in my chair watching instead Aerobics OZ Style doing their bit on the Sydney Harbour foreshore. smile

When I said I was temporarily housebound, twas not cause I love the place..twas body/brain friction. Anyway, due to an underwhelming clamour from those wanting more...here's:

14: Help with rounds of drinks at the pub. Raising yourself from the seat works all the muscle groups in the legs. (Jeff adds: Of course, GUOYB is still a great exercise for the teetotallers)

5: Get off the bus a stop early and you'll burn up 25Kj each minute you walk. (Jeff: Didn't do that this time but did a 27 when out and about today (Tue) for the first time this week)

My motto is: "Never buy a powered wheelchair. The unpowered units at least promote use of the arms. Besides, they are much easier to load in a car.

What resonated with this list of 60 activities I'm sharing here was some are frivolous but all show there are plenty of ways to being active. 'Being' includes 'thinking'..as an add-on to Deb's comments.

I've just been reminded I'll need to undergo repeat neuropsychological testing in 2007. This to monitor my brain in preparation for its donation to research..post mortem. smile My first testing was a cuppla years ago. There was one aspect of testing within the 2 hours of it that baulked me. A list of 10 random common nouns was read out..I needed to repeat back as many as I heard/remembered. The list was immediately re-read to me for a 2nd shot at it. I remembered what I hadn't said first-up but forgot some of the earlier ones. smile

Throughout the 2 hours I was asked to repeat them with no further prompts and with reducing skill. I handled the many facts of a news story throughout and every other tests..without problem..but it irked me about this specific test.

My brain was not encouraged to work that way. My career gave me the skills to remember the many facts within the news story. So, I'm thinking I must make more effort to exercise the under-used parts of my brain. To that end, I'm going to give Sudoku another shot. Has anyone succeeded with this numbers game?

At this stage in life, I am concentrating on being able to remember my own name so that I can recognize it when someone calls me to dinner.

That's OK as long as my mate is serving milkshakes. I don't mind having them served cold.
