Disposable Generation? Part 1Read the article this discussion is about

I don't blame you for being angry with your husband's plight as far as his disability and then pension goes. It sounds as if Canada's pension system is experiencing the same type of pains that Social Security is here in the States. Frustrating for everyone who has paid in over a lifetime and now faces the possibility of empty coffers at retirement. You also mentioned that Elder Abuse is on the rise, and I have to admit I didn't know that. What that means to me is that our generation who are caregivers are the ones doling out the abuse to our parents and family. I had hoped we knew better... -- posted by feistyfemale56 » feistyfemale56 - The search for an honest politician You know, even trying to type those two words in sequence, "honest" and "politician" was difficult to do--my keyboard almost locked up on me. Isn't "honest politician" an oxymoron? Or is it that so many of our elected officials act moronically?-- posted by feistyfemale56 » humorous_sage - Re: The search for an honest politician In response to The search for an honest politician posted by feistyfemale56:Honesty amoung politicians seems to nosedive the week they take office. The dishonest ones control too much power and money. -- posted by humorous_sage » ccookiepoems - Re: The search for an honest politician In response to The search for an honest politician posted by feistyfemale56:We can debate politics till the cows come home to roost but to my way of thinking attitudes about the elderly and policies toward the elderly start with the individual. Our decisions about our parents and grandparents will drive our futures (it's called karma) more than any Soc Security debate. We live in a culture where too often aging well and being healthy gets confused with denying the value of age and experience. That said, I've met some 60-year-olds with the maturity of 12-year-olds and 20-year-olds with wisdom of 60-year-olds. What do we celebrate today? What's on the cover of every magazine? Britney. Paris. Lindsay Lohan. No offense, but what have they done to earn such attention other than be young, beautiful and marketable? I may disagree with Susan Sarandon politically but I would much rather see older women in Hollywood get the attention. At least Demi has struck a blow with Ashton Kutcher. Paul Newman still looks great and contributes beyond so-called celebrity. On the other hand, I think it's telling that so many college students like the Golden Girls. These young women in particular are connecting with an ideal of aging. I've seen aging firsthand when my late grandmother, who refused to go to a hospital or nursing home--and we refused to consider taking her--declined. Her favorite saying about age "Start lying early." At 87, she smoked until thre weeks before her death, drank wine, ate what she wanted and lived in her own home with the support of a loving family--including me. Her rouladen recipe, which FeistyFemale commented on in my topic, is one of her many legacies, and my cookbook was dedicated to her and my mom. My co-author dedicated the book to her grandmother and mom. Although the going got rough with my grandmother, who suffered from end-stage dementia, and I went through all the emotions of loss, abandoning her just wasn't an option. Obviously every family has to make its own choice and I think the future of our aging rests first and foremost with us. -- posted by ccookiepoems » feistyfemale56 - Re: Re: The search for an honest politician Kristin,Thanks so much for stopping by and even more for your insights. I agree with you that our chickens will come home to roost, so to speak, when we are the ones who are older, infirm, or ailing. The ways that we have treated our elders will be revisited upon us--our children will more often than not parrot what we have taught them in that respect. Your grandmother was blessed to have a family who not only upheld her desire to remain at home, but also had the time and inclination to help that be a reality for her. As a nurse, I worked in long term care for more than twenty years, and enjoyed the chances I had to interact with a variety of older adults. My kids sometimes came by to visit the residents, or occasionally, I brought a resident to my home for a meal or just to get out of the nursing home for a bit. I hope I instilled in my offspring to value people of all ages, and more so, not to judge a book by its cover. Time will tell. -- posted by feistyfemale56 » humorous_sage - Re: Re: Re: The search for an honest politician In response to Re: Re: The search for an honest politician posted by feistyfemale56:When I was young, I thought that politicians meant what they said. Now I know better. It seems as though few politicians survive more than one term.
