Hi Elizabeth,

This is a very interesting history. How different the times were back then that advertising for girls to be Harvey girls of "good character" was acceptable. That strategy sure could be put to good use today - to advertise for corporate executives!

Even more amazing is that if someone claimed they were of good character, then someone else would believe them, with absolutely no proof. How "innocent" it was then!

Yes, those certainly were more "innocent" times. When I read your post, it reminded me that those were also the times when a handshake was considered enough to constitute a binding contract between the two parties involved, because that meant that each party had given his word!
