» Travelsleuth - Turkey Vultures - a success story! You certainly come across some weird and wonderful facts in your travels off the beaten path! It's good to know that this is one bird whose numbers appear to be on the increase in USA, (according to the Turkey Vulture Society whose link you kindly supply). Elsewhere around the globe, other members of the vulture genus are faring less well and numbers are decreasing due to a variety of causes such as man-made toxins in the food chain. -- posted by Travelsleuth » swest - Re: Turkey Vultures - a success story! In response to Turkey Vultures - a success story! posted by Travelsleuth:Stuart, Thanks so much for reading the article and commenting! I've come to really like these ugly birds. I know of a spot along a main highway where the Turkey Vultures sit on high tension power lines with their wings outspread. I have no idea why they do that, but they just hang around there. I hope something can be done about them disappearing elsewhere around the globe! -- posted by swest

I really enjoyed this article. The buzzard is a much maligned bird and you don't see many articles written in its favor. But they really are a valuable bird that deserves respect. -- posted by Joy Butler » feistyfemale56 - Graceful birds in flight I have to admit something: for most of my adult life in northern Ohio, when I spotted a large bird with a wide wingspan seemingly floating in the sky, in my mind I always named it a hawk. I found out not too many years ago that these graceful birds were turkey buzzards.I didn't want to believe that something so very beautiful in the sky was something as homely as the turkey buzzard is on the ground, but now that I've read your article, Sharon, about these birds and the vital role they play in the wild, I no longer hold a negative feeling about these birds. Great article--thank you. : ) -- posted by feistyfemale56
