All of the above advice is contained in Phyllis Witney's book, written in the early-1980s and is absolute must-reading for aspiring writers. She dedicated an entire chapter to the process of organising work, keeping a file as described above, and how to let a story "marinate" before you get stuck in. No disrespect intended to Angie Dixon - there are many people who've probably never read Writing Fiction, because I think it's out of print.
