Subplots and Side Characters, how?
This archived discussion is "read only".
» AlmostCool - A few questions: Hi everyone, I'm new and have never posted before, so I hope this is the right place to post this.Anywaysys, my question is concerning subplots and side charactersBasiclyly, how do you all figure out what side characters to use as well as which subplots will fit, without making it seem like the subplot should be a story of it's own. I'm having a lot of trouble. I have my main story fleshed out rather well, but I'm having trouble figuring out the side characters and subplots. If anyone could give me some hints and tips on how they tackle this, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. -- posted by AlmostCool » tonka54 - subplots I know, this is hard! Depending on my mood, I can find myself down alleyways that I had no idea how to get out of! Two ways I can tell if the subplot/side character should be there....First, go back and read what you wrote a few days later (let things simmer on the back-burner of your brain). I find that it's sometimes easier to see a blind alley from a distance. Secondly, you have to be very honest with yourself; does the character or subplot move the story forward? Is there a true reason for the scene? Hope it helps! -- posted by tonka54
