» VikingforJesus - Help...

Hallo...
My name is Kristofer Midtlyng. I am of Norwegian descent born in America and am now looking to move back to Norway, specifically Bergen. I am finding it rather difficult. I still have relatives in Bergen and in the south of Norway. I am in no need of funds or work from Norway. Is there any help you can offer, any guidance?
Mane takk.
Kristofer Eirik Reventlow Midtlyng.

Hi Kristofer,
You may find moving to Norway to be very challenging indeed! It's very difficult to obtain a residence permit - basically, if you're not seeking asylum or reunification with a spouse or child, you must either be accepted into an educational program or have a job offer, according to Norway's directorate of immigration at http://old.udi.no/default.asp?intStruktu...
If you are not in need of work, you may want to consider the schooling route as a short-term solution. You could apply to the university in Bergen, or if this isn't of interest to you, check into a folkehoyskole with a program of study that you might enjoy (see here for more info http://www.folkehogskole.no/english_main... )
You could also check in for more information with the expatriate community in Norway at http://www.expatexchange.com/net.cfm?net...
Sometimes people who have jumped through all the hoops have a great deal of insight into what the process takes. Hope this helps and keep us updated on how things are going!

Wow! I didn't realize that. We are spoiled in the United States; we welcome folks with open arms.

Again...
Mange takk!

I noticed that you were an editor for some books on Norway. Is that correct? If so, which ones?

No problem! I wish you luck!
Yes, I am the editor/writer of three anthologies on Norwegian culture. You'll find the links to these below.

What you say about moving to Norway is true of moving to Europe in general. I have a friend who would love to move back to her native Germany which she left to come to Canada as an adult. What is holding her back is the amount of money she would have to pay to bring her health care insurance up to date from the time she left there, about $30,000. So she is staying in Canada.

In words of two syllables, "Oofda."
Or do you prefer "Ufda?"
