» RosemaryBasil - I love this sentiment! <img src="http://members.aol.com/tequilateddy/tree...">Thank you, Diana, for a very well-written and warmly wise article! I have felt this way for years, I know how therapeutic gardening has been for my own mind, body and spirit! I try to express it online and get others motivated. I hope you will drop by my Bohemian Balcony here at Suite and http://www.flowergumbo.com for a spot of holiday cheer and flower power. God Bless! Rose -- posted by RosemaryBasil » CarolWallace - What great ideas! You've made some terrific suggestions here. And I envy you the opportunity to create a senses garden for Alzheimer's patients - that is a real contribution.Your suggestion about Disney World is a good one, too. I had the opportunity to tour behind the scenes with the Garden Writers Association last month and the ways in which they used plant life to both amuse and control the animals in the Africa area amazed me. Anyway - I thought I'd let you know I'm making this the article of the week in the Garden Center. Thanks for a lovely article. BTW - regarding the Victory Gardens. In fact they did provide food for the individuals who planted them - but that was a direct contribution to the war effort because it meant that much more of our food supply that could be sent overseas. -- posted by CarolWallace » andreajo13 - Gardening Gifts! Hello Diana! My son received a gift of a mini greenhouse herb garden for Christmas which I thought was a wonderful thing to be given. My son loves plants and gardening so that will be a wonderful way to begin the growing season. Your article has also inspired me to plant "peace" flowers this year and I will create my own Victory Garden! Wishing you a ver happy New Year! -- posted by andreajo13 » firelady - Heartfelt Thanks I thank you all for your kind words. Authors often wonder if anyone ever really reads what they spend hours agonizing over. It's a treat to know someone actually does. This article obviously came out of my distress over 9/11. One of my other hats is serving as a volunteer firefighter. If I hadn't had my garden to retreat to, I would have drowned myself in my own tears over my fallen brethren. It's not the first time I've written on the subject of gardening as a type of therapy, but it was the first time (at least in the last 50 years) that a major tragedy affected the entire nation, leaving us all grieving. Before I switched to science, I studied sociology and psychology, with the intent of becoming a counselor. That goal never materialized, but if it had, I'm sure I would have urged my patients to garden. I know of no better way to chase the boogeyman from your mind and heart. May you all celebrate years of gardening peace and joy! -- posted by firelady
