Hi Diana,

Thanks for the public garden information. It will help gardeners from other areas, too...gardeners who venture into New England and want to relax by visiting some familar terrain...gardens.

May I welcome you, please, to Suite101.com?

Diana Morgan. Try Boston Ivy, it is supposed to be zone 5 hardy. English Ivy might survive if protected. A near relative that's hardy to zone 3 is Virginia creeper. The hardiest roses are miniatures, but many of the rugosas and some new varieties out of Canada hold up well too. Look for a future column on cold hardy roses. One hybrid tea I've had great success with here in zone 4 is Mr. Lincoln, a deep dark red rose that has that lovely rose fragrance. Otherwise I've given up on hybird teas. Also, most of the species roses tolerate New England winters quite well. Good luck and thank you for reading the column.
