Is -33C northern? Yes!
This archived discussion is "read only".
» gardengremlin - What is northern? Let me tell you... Northern? How about -33C as we speak! This is zone 2 on the Canadian zone map. Let me tell you, this is where that zone map really does mean something. I have quickly learned that although gardeners in other zones can take those maps with a grain of salt, we cannot. If the tag says zone 3, the plant will surely die with a season or two.Imagine my disappointment to learn that my ninebark will never have that "ninebark" appearance. Why? Because it dies back to the ground every winter. I asked some fellow gardeners here if this was normal, or just due to a harsh winter. They looked at me as if I had seven heads. "Of course the shrubs die back to the ground!" they exclaimed. (This happens to potentillas and even the Siberian dogwood). Well, not where I come from, in zone 3! I feel very much like I've landed in a hostile, alien landscape. After three summers, it doesn't get any easier. I believe sometimes that my passion for gardening will surely end in this, the polar opposite of Hell's Kitchen. -- posted by gardengremlin » Rocksy - Re: What is northern? Let me tell you... In response to message posted by gardengremlin:Hi g-g...Where do you live? I am in zone 3, and it sure does seem that the one zone difference makes a big deal. -- posted by Rocksy » Housefull - Re: What is northern? Let me tell you...
