» QuarterRat - Love train travel... Just found your topic... Great!I love train travel but have not had a chance to ride the City of New Orleans yet - But I do plan too... -- posted by QuarterRat » Literalman - City of New Orleans I rode the City of New Orleans twice, and both trips were some time ago. In 1979, when it was still called the Panama Limited, my wife and I rode from New Orleans to Chicago. At the time, the train had Amfleet cars, less than ideal for sleeping. The no-smoking rule wasn't enforced, and another passenger had gotten herself two extra pillows before we boarded--she took them from our seats.About 6 years later, traveling alone to a convention, I rode the City of New Orleans and had a delightful trip. I boarded in Chicago and sat with another guy who just happened to have brought along a whole cooler full of cheese, sausage, beer and other goodies, which he shared with me. (At the time I didn't know that bringing your own alcohol is against the rules.) The train was operating with Heritage equipment--refurbished older cars--and we sat in the dome, traveling south through Illinois while a thunderstorm raged overhead. What a cool experience! -- posted by Literalman
