Great article on the ANZAC troops at Gallipoli.

Did you see the services on Anzac Day this year in Turkey in which both the Australian and New Zealand Prime Ministers took part?

There is a lot of joint history between Australia and New Zealand.

Keep up the work on this topic.

Quite right Joanna- NZ and Australia may have their TransTasman battles in the sports field but I've always thought that is just like brothers jostling.
Certainly when it counts I think we work well together, probably something that was forged in Gallipoli. It can make you cry to read what those young men suffered, and how many didn't come back. And the joint service this year was very moving. I over here the ANZAC services are always well attended and in fact in recent years have got even larger. Nice to see.

Yes, the Anzac Day services were very well attended here this year too. I think more young people are starting to get interested even though there are almost no original ANZACs left. This year too we had the soldiers that had been in East Timor marching as well. Of course, there are still soldiers over there and in Bougainville.

We have very close sporting ties, Auckland is in the Australian Rugby League competition. Which of course means that when Auckland has a home game one of our teams has to fly over there! And Auckland is frequently playing over here.

Wasn't NZ part of NSW originally and called Maoriland?

HI Joanna
Yes I think orginally NZ was run from out of Sydney. This was in very early colonial days, when the european population consisted of traders, missionaries and transient whalers. I'll have to look into the Maoriland bit- I know we were called a few things though... = )
Do you think we'll join up again? (that's only a semi-serious question btw)

» Sue59 - Reminder

Hi Pip,
Thanks for the reminder of Chunuk Bair. My family tends to use Anzac Day as a time to remember 2WW as 3 of my fathers brothers lost there lives then. But as you said is is good to see that though we have lost our 1WW vets the youth still remember.

BTW how asleep were you to suggest we once or maybe again join up with Aust. Grin, my heart missed a beat.!! Were we once briefly run from Aust.?

Hi Sue
I must have been having a later night- but yes, I think *way* back the New South Wales Governor had responsibility. But I'm not going to suggest we go back in time!
