For those of you wondering about these fabulous blue toadstools (photographed by Suite101's Howard Deutch on one of his gardening adventures in New Zealand).... here are a few fungus facts.

Peter Buchanan, Mycologist at Landcare Research in New Zealand says "the mushroom is known as the Blue Entoloma, with the Latin name: Entoloma virescens (also known as Entoloma
hochstetteri). The fungus is a favourite "prize" for photographers, and occurs in podocarp forest in several parts of New Zealand, fruiting mainly in autumn. Its colour makes it easily seen in comparison with many other more abundant but less colourful species. Functionally, it is a decomposer breaking down organic matter (plant litter, etc) in the soil."

So there you go! Howard, you can feel very proud - a prize indeed!
