» LyndaH - For those of you wondering about these fabulous blue toadstools

For those of you wondering about these fabulous blue toadstools (photographed by Suite101's Howard Deutch on one of his gardening adventures in New Zealand).... here are a few fungus facts.

<img src=http://www.suite101.com/userfiles/9433/h... align=left>

Peter Buchanan, Mycologist at Landcare Research in New Zealand says "the mushroom is known as the Blue Entoloma, with the Latin name: Entoloma virescens (also known as Entoloma
hochstetteri). The fungus is a favourite "prize" for photographers, and occurs in podocarp forest in several parts of New Zealand, fruiting mainly in autumn. Its colour makes it easily seen in comparison with many other more abundant but less colourful species. Functionally, it is a decomposer breaking down organic matter (plant litter, etc) in the soil."

So there you go! Howard, you can feel very proud - a prize indeed!

Thank you Lynda. The Mycologist I found was in New York State and obviously knew nothing about the exotica of your country. Luckily we were in New Zealand in Autumn (April, down under). So those blue beauties are mushrooms. I will never forget my first sight of them. Yours is a most exciting country.

» thesnakeman - giant toadstool found in brook

i know little when it comes to horticulture of any kind, including toadstools. I stumbled upon a toadstool type thing the other day and let me just point out that this was no ordinary toadstool. It was huge beyond all belief and having looked up in one of those books about toadstools and other such stuff i failed to find it. If anyone wants a picture of it- if they can help- then email me at thesnakeman@ukonline.co.uk

thanks

I haven't sent the magazine yet - two Birthdays in the family and! and! just too rushed these days

Snakeman, I have an excellent book on fungi which is at the country garden where I am going now for 3 days - shall bring it up and email you next week.

Perhaps you could give more details here while I am away?
