"I guess I thought New Thought was Christian..."

Many New Thoughters consider themselves Christian, but not in what would be called the traditional or fundamentalist sense. We believe, and work to apply, most of the teachings of Jesus. We also teach from the writings of Buddha, not as Buddhists, but because there is much to learn from him. Just like with Jesus.

Remember, New Thought is open ended. There are a lot of people who are transitioning from other ways of believing and New Thought helps them get a certain kind of stabilization in that transition. We are all still learning and growing and seeking. It helps to have like minded people on the journey with you.

And no, we are not related to Scientology.

Makes sense to me... And actually Spiritualism borrows from a variety of teachings as well as having its own literature.

Growing and adapting is a good thing IMO, and although Spiritualism does have its principles and some basic core beliefs re spirit communication and the afterlife it too does grow and change with new religious, philosophical ideas and scientific research.

Like New Thoughters there are many Spiritualists who consider themselves Christian but are not traditional or Fundamentalist in their views. Like New Thought people choose the kind of Spiritualism that works for them It is interesting how both these faiths are for many a good alternative to the more restrictive traditions that allows freedom of choice in terms of one's spiritual choices.

» sacred_insights - New Thought Spiritualism??

In response to Re: Re: Re: No Contest please posted by RichardSpeaks:

While doing a search on New Thought I came across something called New Thought Spiritualism http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Atlantis...

Have you heard of this before?

What I found most interesting is their statement of beliefs and the fact that they seem to follow the 7 Principles of Spiritualism that I am familiar with.

Just thought you might find it interesting as they seem to have blended both our traditions in an innovative way... smile

Yes, I have heard of New Thought Spiritualism. I'm surprised I haven't thought of it before now. Like I said, within New Thought, there are many diversions. The common thread is that consciousness is cause, change your thinking, change your life. But experimenting is encouraged. As long as, like Hippocrates admonished, we help, or at least not harm, then seek in any direction that serves us. There are many paths. One energy, but many paths. I'm on one, you're on one, Pinky102 is on one. So are Tigerhalf and Plox. I applaud that. Some get a little testy about their "way" as you know, but that's OK, too. Makes for interesting dialogue, don't you agree??

Much love...

New Thought Spiritualism is an interesting mix of two very interesting traditions... I do like that in New Thought there is something for everyone and that each is respectful of the other.

Yes examining the different paths folks are on can make for interesting dialogue and there is much to be learned from the exchange. As for the testy folks I think life has enough stress without that added nonsense. Learning to flow as spiritalk suggested above. smile

Must say your posts and those of a few others are the only reason I continue to come back to Suite. Thank you for being a positive influence here. As for the rest well whatever floats their boats or lets them sleep at night. Social change and spiritual growth are slow but they does happen... smile

» Pinky102 - Rephrasing My Question

In response to Re: Re: Re: New Thought Spiritualism?? posted by RichardSpeaks:

Let me rephrase my question to you, Richard.

How do the churches you minister involve families in programs to help bolster a sense of unity with each other?

Isn't that the job of a resident pastor? not a free lance minister?

A couple of thoughts came to mind:
-when missionaries went into various countries to bring properity to the location, many converted to continue to get benefits. When push came to shove, they reverted to their old ways. Does this apply?

-There will never be a prisoner claim a change to Spiritualism...we advocate Personal Responsibility and they can be saved in Chritianity. This alone, draws many to its doors.

God bless, J

I figured that he was a visiting minister from what he has written. My questions was about programs those churches might offer to their memberships.

". . .a sense of unity with each other?"

You know, I'm not certain. You might check with the Unity or Religious Science links to get a better picture. The churches I minister to are mostly Baby Boomer-dominated with very few children.
