» sacred_insights - New Thought and Spiritualism founded around the same time?

Having engaged in very interesting discussions with you Richard, I am interested in how you present ideas specifically as to how the relate to the Christian/Biblical myth. I would love to know more about New Thought religion, science, and philosophy . It seems that New Thought found its beginnings around the same time as Spiritualism given the date you state in your article. If we could I would love to discuss with you how New Thought and Spiritualism are similar and how they differ in a respectful way that will allow folks to learn more about both our traditions. What do you think? Could we do that? And if so where do we start?

» ArthurRuger - A faith, a philosophy, a way of life.

Apt words that describe what the role of human spirituality ought to play in day to day living.

... stripped of shoulds, shouldn'ts, thou shalts and thou shalt nots.

Instead ...

People, you know that you can figure things out for yourselves and you have no reason not to try.

In response to sacred insights

We can start right here, and right now. I am actually rather interested in your faith as well. I don't have a lot of experience with anyone who calls themselves spiritualist.

One of the many reasons I am attracted to New Thought is its willingness to continue learning. As the Buddha said, "Start each day with a beginner's mind." When we think we know it all, we have hit bottom.

Another reason is that New Thought does not condemn anyone who doesn't believe as we do. We know that each way of faith has much to offer and we steal whatever we can, see if it fits, and if it does, we incorporate it. If not, we simply discard it. But we do not discard the believer in that faith.

But the one thing that I hold onto with all my life, my mind, my heart and my joy is: There is but one power, one presence, and one life. That life is my life now. That life is God. God is all there is. Everything is God made manifest, the Unlimited experiencing the limited. You've seen me write that several times. I believe it with all my heart. It can move me to tears when I meditate upon that one thought: My existence is God-existence. There is nothing but God. And God is Love.

Is that enough to get us started?

Great way to start Richard! Seems like New Thought and Spiritualism have many basic things in common.

Like New Thought, Spiritualism is a Religion Philosophy and Science to live by in our every day lives.

Spiritualism was founded in Hindesville NY through the "Hydesville Phenomena" of the Fox sisters. It is through the Fox sisters that people of 19th century America discovered that mediumship and communication with those in spirit was possible. The continuous existence of life after the change called death is the core of Spiritualist beliefs. Where and how did New thought find its beginnings?

We often say that Spiritualism is to be studied and not preached. The focus is continuous learning and like New Thought we do seek to understand the ideas of other traditions and borrow those that are inline with the 7 Principles of Spiritualism:

1. The Fatherhood of God

2. The Brotherhood of Man

3. The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels

4. The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul

5. Personal Responsibility

6. Compensation and Retribution Hereafter for all the Good or Evil Deeds done on Earth

7. Eternal Progress Open to every Human Soul

Now the language of these is dated but they were brought through the mediumship of Emma Hardinge Britten (1823-1899) in 1871. These are general principles that are used to guide the practicing Spiritualist and are open to the liberty personal interpretation. Does New thought have a set of guiding principles or a special holy book it follows?

We accept that Spiritualism is not the only spiritual path and we also do not condemn others for holding different beliefs than ours. We try to respect others choices and see that each faith serves a purpose even if we do not know what that purpose might be.

God is one energy that we all are part of and have access to no matter what faith we follow so I would say that Spiritualism agrees with the New Thought ideas: "There is but one power, one presence, and one life. That life is my life now. That life is God. God is all there is. Everything is God made manifest, the Unlimited experiencing the limited." and "My existence is God-existence. There is nothing but God. And God is Love."

I often say that we are spiritual beings having a physical experience and it is in living that experience in the here and now that we individualize our soul and rediscover our spiritual selves.

God is universal. It is the same energy we tap into no matter what faith we follow and the energy of God is of love only.

What does New Thought teach about Spiritual Healing and Mediumship? I am curious if New thought has something like that in its tradition. Or is there some other special practice that is integral to the New Thought tradition?

Please feel free to ask any questions re Spiritualism if there is something I have written here that is not clear. Looking forward to your reply!
