What I want to know is, why does God expect us to do things he doesn't do himself? "Turn the other cheek" and "forgive seventy times seven"--not "forgive only if you kill something of yours and they profess to believe you killed it for them so they can be worthy enough for your forgiveness." Handing out free forgiveness seems more like something God should be capable of doing than lowly human beings. Yet God expects something from us in return, like we owe him for creating us and giving us the free will to have our own ideas. But it's not news that the Biblical God is self-serving, jealous and petty.

I'll have to put Spong's new book on my Amazon with list, I loved his Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism.

Hello Kaci,
Perhaps you've noticed that few here reply to one poster. You're learning firsthand why this is so.

You introduced an interesting view on the traditional Jewish attitudes towards women. Do you think the OT God was/is depicted as a misogynist because the authors of these scriptures were? Is it really God's attitude, or just that of mere men?

That was a lot to digest, Arthur. Enjoyable.

Christ as a mortal man was a devout and practicing Jew who never departed from His Jewish perception and understanding of God, and who certainly did not “remake” God into something else.

IMO, I don't think Jesus remade God, but clearly exposed to the Jews that they had done so. He did, on several occasions, ignore and refute Jewish 'tradition' (ritualistic hand washing, Sabbath work, etc.), which indicates to me that he did indeed depart in his practice of Judaism. I don't view him as a devout Jew, but as an author of a type of spirituality new to the Jews in particular. Was this spirituality new to the world? Did not other 'pagan' faiths believe in a loving personal relationship with their God? I don't know. What do you think?

It's very unlikely that so many of them would go and face the firing squad for a lie, or be horribly tortured like many of them were.

Throughout the ages, men have died for a cause, Craig. For a right one and a wrong one - a truth and a lie... The Crusades. Jonestown. Waco. 9-11. World wars and police actions. Civil and human rights movements. Suicide bombings in Iraq. Etcetera.

I know I shouldn't, but sometimes I forget how much it hurts to beat my head against a brick wall and need reminding. LOL

Misogyny is the creation of men. Before patriarchy was matriarchy, with female gods.

» _Boanerges_ - brick walls! lol

In response to Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Virgin Birth posted by HarvestMoon:

The ONLY thing I've said on this subject at ALL is that men were thought to contribute the entire DNA of the child and women were only the carrying vessels. You must be confusing me with someone else. Kaci

Hmmm.. if that is ALL you said, then how did you arrive at all the following? (your first message addressing a non-issue)

1. Let's not forget the socio-historical context here as well. Two thousand years ago, it was thought that women contributed nothing to making babies, they were just the vessel that carried them. The entire child came from the father.

Actually, the testimony of the women is what set in motion, Christianity. Imagine starting a truth based on a womens testimony! Kinda flies in the face of your claim, although [some] of it is truth. As I said early, certainly not all believed as you presented, with examples of Hosea, Ruth, Esther and Sarah to name only a few..

2. Thus, Mary had no involvement in the conception of Jesus, contributed no DNA.

Hmm.. and you arrived at this conclusion by what logical thought process?

3. So, Jesus was 100% divine, if you believe Mary was indeed a virgin.

What has divinty to do with virginity? A redundant statement, which.. not sure what the point is actually..

4. Which makes it very odd that he referred to himself repeatedly as the Son of Man.

Hmm... you must be an evolutionist? Do you believe that [men and women] developed from pond scum? If not, then they must have been created! Take oyur pick, then do as Phil suggest, deconstruct!

Oh well.. Maybe it would probably be better to talk to a brick wall! That way, it won't answer, which is the definition of being completly open minded for sure!smile ..lol..

Acts 7:56 And Stephen said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Tee heee. I've hit a lot of brick walls, Kaci. I learned that beating the wall only hurts me, not the wall. smile

Ah hah... Man's revenge for being subjugated by women goddesses all those centuries, ay? smile So, if misogyny is a human invention and not divine creation, I wonder what else is human invention?

In response to Bo

"I wonder what else is human invention?"

The OT god, for one thing.

Pope Benedict for another.

Every last word of the Bible.

Evolution in the present sense.

Religion, philosophy.

You get the picture.
