In response to Trash posted by hawknut:

One of the Jewish traditions, there are many, has it that after God created existence and left the world, a lot of residue was left behind.

Imagine! Flying sparks and flashes of light (stars and lightening?) and all sorts of things. Originally God embodied both female and male aspects of creation. When God finally left Earth the female part was left behind and still roams the netherlands. That part is known as the Shekinah, thus, the "Shekinah Glory of God" which is spoken about.

Once a year, these particular Jews (men of course because women are only their helpers) gather together outside their villages in the wilds and pray for the Shekinah to visit them. They disrobe and roll in the dust and beg for [Her] presence all night long until the dawn appears. [She] can be heard in the distance; but, never really seen in substance. Makes you wonder what those Jews aren't getting from their women doesn't it? Those are the Sephardics, I think--the ones who let their side burns grow long in curls and who wear heavy woolen overcoats with black homburg hats even in summer.

I always thought Shekinah was an asexual word for God (or the mediator of God - Holy Spirit) appearing on earth as light.

presence all night long until the dawn appears.

As in Dawn (female name - first light)? I've never heard of this naked rolling ritual, but it sounds like fun. smile

"...it sounds like fun."

Guys with guys rolling around in the dirt and throwing ashes on their bodies praying and whinning for a female presence of God?

Not my idea of fun.

smile

But, then ...

By the way, their method of disrobing? They tear their clothing off in shreds. LOL How would that grab you if you were a quite traveller in the country side the night of the Shikinah ritual and you stumbled across these guys? Talk about falling off your chair and laughing your butt off.

As an aside, I wonder if the pronoun, she, comes to us as the first part of the female word for God? Do the women who visit here ever have any feelings of being the female rendition of God?

"Just what I think anyway."

What a magnificent surmisal. I couldn't have said it better myself.

You're right, of course.

"Shekinah Glory"

I, too, have always heard that this was the Holy Spirit. Growing up Pentecostal, it was often said that the Shekinah was a special gift bestowed upon certain people. We always hoped it would be us.

No such luck. I spoke in tongues a couple of times, but I admitted to myself later that I had made it up. I never told the congregation, though.

Some tribal Jews thought that the wind rustling the leaves in a tree was the Holy Spirit.

And, how about the "Will of The Wisp"? Ever see one? One winter, when we ownd in a bi-level home and I was looking out a lower window across the snow in a lightening storm, a ball of lightning came flying around the corner toward our house and then it dissapated. That could easily have been seen as some kind of spirit. What would have happened if I had been outside and it had struck me? What would the people at church have thought?

"female rendition of God?"
Such feelings are not allowed by the three religions based on The Book, so Good Christian Women don't even have such wicked thoughts!
It might interfere with their submissiveness.

See, I don't believe in supernatural miracles. You present many of the reasons why. Nature has a magnificent way of fooling, or at least diverting, the unwary. Most of the stuff reported in old holy books as miracles were in fact, if anything, nature in all HER glory. Also, nature is so, I mean SO incredible that it's miraculous in its own right, don't you think? The fact that life even exists is the most miraculous of all. We don't need ghosts and spirits and demons. We have enough sparkle right here in the so-called "real" world. Did you know they are now discovering that cells they once thought couldn't rejuvenate themselves--heart cells, brain cells, and the like--are now showing that they can, indeed. The wonders of the human body never cease to amaze me. Did you know they just found a half-million year old FULL mammoth skeleton in California? Amazing! Of course, the fundamentalists will say God put it there intact to test our faith, but so what? It's miraculous in either case.

I know you get my point. That's the kind of creator in which I believe. No hocus pocus, just plain ol' nature, the grandest miracle of them all. No need for human/godman sacrifice. Just stars and nebulae and protons. No need to punish for sin. Just galaxies and comets and Northwest pine trees. No need for Armageddons. Just oceans and porcupines and volcanoes. We may, indeed, ultimately destroy ourselves, but nature will out!! Praise be unto Nature. (That'll shake up a couple of ya!!)

Like I said, what's in a name?

I met Jesus when I was seven years old.

Let's see, that was some, holy cow, 66 years ago almost.

Since then, I've been all over the lot. Believe me.

Yup, I agree with you.

Praise be to the force that has given me this opportunity to experience reality.

Yumpin' yimminy!!
