In response to Pinky102You are right, of course. Change is the only constant. And when folks are afraid of it, they set themselves up for real pain, and more fear. However, the Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. What do you think that means?

Well, not being a literalist, I think it means that God is the Great I Am What I Am Becoming.
But, then, what do I know?
I'm the same way.

In response to Pinky102Two things: I am not a literalist either, but then you already know that. Second, I think somewhere along the line I have either read Jacoby's book, or at least perused it at the bookstore. Let me know your thoughts.
I see the entire Bible as allegory. To be sure, there is some history involved, but only to support the stories. Charles Fillmore, co-founder in the 19th c. of the wonderful group called Unity put together a great Bible dictionary called The Metaphysical Bible Dictionary. It puts a non-literal spin on just about everything in the Bible, even the historical parts to some extent. You might want to check that one out. Just for the fun of it. I don't know where you might find it; some of the bookstores like Borders and others may carry it. But if you can't find it and want to, let me know and I will find you a copy somewhere. Only if you want one, of course.

I'll be busy with Jacoby starting next week. Just reading the introduction was enough to build my curiosity.

In response to Pinky102You may well have heard of Charles Fillmore. Unity is one the larger New Thought denominations. And it's often the butt of fundamentalist criticism for the very reason it doesn't take the Bible literally. Add Religious Science, Divine Science, Science of Mind, and Independent New Thought, and you have virtually the entire spectrum of non-literalists that fundamentalists love to criticize. Oh, and you can include the evolutionists and most astronomers into the mix, right?? Throw in a little Christian Science just to muck it up a bit, along with Hare Krishna, and don't forget Jehovah's Witnesses and the Mormons.
I don't where I intended to go with this!!

In response to Pinky102I have been following a couple of interesting debates on TV lately, one side a fundamentalist Christian saying that this country was founded on Christian principles and of course, the other one a Free Thinker claiming just the opposite. Well, here's an interesting website for anyone interested in closing that debate. I will let you look at it and then perhaps you can comment in this discussion.
