WOW! Who would have thought that we started out with a "Bah! Humbug" attitude. I really enjoy reading your article, Mom. It is so informative. WTG!
Love,
Mariah

It doesn't sound like it was much fun to be in Portsmouth, NH in the 18th century. I loved your article.

I had no idea that early New Englanders shunned the Christmas holiday. I thought that with the Puritans it would have been second nature for them to celebrate the birth of Christ.

What inspired Franklin Pierce to put up the nations' first Christmas tree?

I hope you have a very Merry Christmas! My thanks to the Hessian and Irish immigrants for making the holiday bright!

Happy Holidays!

Christmas has quite a history and I venture to guess that nowadays we spend more, go more, and eat more in celebration of this holiday than ever before. Thanks for a great article.

This is a very informative and interesting article, Tina. I really appreciate this history of early New England's Ba Humbug spirit. Thank goodness this is no longer the case. Merry Christmas!

Hi Christina,

I guess when I'm feeling rather bah humbug myself, I can consider myself as a distant Puritan relative continuing a long-spanning tradition.

Enjoyed your informative article.

And dare I say, happy holidays?!

Hi Tara,
At that time, Portsmouth was the center of the Provincial government, so unless you were involved in the shipping industry, I think life was pretty hard. I much prefer the Portsmouth of today!!

I don't know what inspired Franklin Pierce to put up a tree, especially since the start of his presidency was marked by a terrible tragedy when he lost his son in a train accident.

Thank you for stopping by! smile
Tina
