» grimaceb - Re: New England Patriots

I was the biggest New England Patriots fan in the entire world for about three hours yesterday, and what a ride it was. Being a Steelers fan, there was nothing I wanted more this year than for the Steelers to beat the Pats and then the Rams in the Super Bowl.

Barring that, however, I just wanted the Rams to win. I was happy with Oakland going. Even Baltimore. Because I thought they could pull it off. But I never in a million years imagined that the New England Patriots would finally win a Super Bowl by beating the Rams, on turf, in New Orleans. Just goes to show what underestimation can do to a team.

It wasn't the prettiest win. Not by a long shot. But if Tebucky Jones' fumble recovery TD hadn't been brought back, only to be followed by a Kurt Warner rushing touchdown, I wouldn't have been surprised to see this game become the biggest upset in Super Bowl history. Even the way it turned out was a beautiful story.

ESPN commented often on how no one was rooting for the underdogs. I disagree. Listening to the fans' reactions early, I determined that many - like myself - were rooting for the Pats. We just didn't think they had a chance in the world of pulling it off. What a pleasant surprise, and bravo Tom Brady!

(BTW, Ireland started off the Six Nations Rugby championship with a 54-10 victory over Wales in Dublin. Next up: England in London in two weeks time!)

Not an easy task with the spanking England laid on Scotland, either. 29-3??? Three??? Yikes. I did catch the opening half of the Ireland-Wales game, and I have no doubt that Ireland can hold their own against England.

The halftime score was, what? I forget, but Wales only had three. So if anyone can beat back the Brits, I have full confidence it's Ireland.

Thanks for joining in Mary!! The Pats victory has filled New Englanders with a great spirit.

I've seen a clip of Paul McCartney singing "A Hard Days Night" with some of the commentators. Looks like they had a good time! LOL I was a big Beatles fan as a teenager. I still like their music. smile

Hi Renie,
Thanks for stopping by and joining in this little cyber celebration!

I also learned about the game from my son, who is a football fan, too. We were talking about the game briefly the day before and I asked him if he thought the Pats really had a chance. He said yes and described the circumstances, which turned out to be exactly what happened!

It's been a long time coming -- New Englanders are very happy and proud! smile

Hi Grimace,

Thank you for posting what happened. I was afraid I wouldn't get it straight, so I didn't try. LOL It's really nice to have the information in the discussion.

I agree with you that there were many fans rooting for the Pats. They were going crazy here before the game with the Steelers. There are a couple of fans in Manchester who are so devoted to the Pats that they have turned their garage into a replica of a football field, complete with bleachers, astro turf, and a wide screen TV. They have over 100 guests. It's grown so much, they even have sponsors!

Thanks for joining in the celebration!

Now you have a taste of how we felt when the Mariners had such a great year. Way to go, Patriots! Thanks for starting this discussion, Tina.
