Hi Mary,
I'm glad you enjoyed this book review. I know how much you love history and I do, too. I bet your Uncle had some interesting stories to tell!

We sure found out what happens when winter shows up late, didn't we?!?! We had the same kind of weather. It was terrible. We also lost electricity, but it didn't go out until about 10 minutes of 11:00 PM (That reminds me -- does anyone know how Law & Order - Special Victims Unit ended?) I hope your weather has calmed down. Today it's cold, but sunny here.

Thank you for stopping by! I'm always happy to see you and read your comments, my friend!

Hi Jerri,
I'm sure you are right. According to Koop before it was all over, "almost 400,000 German POWs would occupy almost 500 camps located in almost every state." I was stunned when I read that -- I had no idea!

I know what you mean about finding time to read -- as I said to Martin, so many books, so little time!

Hi Renie,
Thank you! This book brought a new dimension to my understanding of life during the war years. Your articles have done the same thing for me. The triumph of the human spirit through all kinds of terrible experiences is an inspiration to us all. Thank you, Renie.

In response to message posted by AnneWatkins:
Hi Anne,
I share in your surprise -- I had no idea there was a POW camp in the US, much less right here in NH. As I was telling Jerri in an earlier post, I was flabbergasted to learn that at one point or another in those years, almost 400,000 German POWs occupied almost 500,000 camps located in most of the states in the US. I can't believe I never heard that before!!

Thanks for your kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the review!

Hi Tricia,

Judging from the posts here, we are not alone when it comes to being surprised to learn of WWII POW camps in the US! This book is a small one, but it is jam packed with information. I couldn't put it down -- I kept coming across information that would have me saying, "Wow -- I didn't know that!"

Greetings, I knew there had been POWS in North America but your article gave me a different insight in the relationships between the prisoners and the community. Thanks.

» Mugwump53 - Stark irony

I hope the bok is half as good as the review. What a fascinating story about the prison break.

A touch of irony, as you describe the decency and the relationships between guards and prisoners. In Florida, the town of Stark (or Starke, I am not sure of the spelling) is the location of the prison in which the executions are carried out. Ted Bundy and many others, (famous, infamous and unknown), have met their fate there. Somehow that seems to me ironic when compared to your decent town of the same name.

Thanks for a gripping look into a fascinating piece of history.

Hi John,

Wow -- the two Starks (Starkes) do present quite an irony. I guess it gets even more ironic when you consider that the prison in Stark, NH has not been used since and is now overgrown. According to reports, it's hard to tell where it was.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review and I appreciate your comments and support! You made my day - thank you! smile
