» grimaceb - Haunted New Hampshire

I have only spent three months of my life in New Hampshire, but those three months led to the one and only time I've ever feared a ghost. This past summer, as I was working as Music Director at the Mt. Washington Valley Theatre Company in North Conway, NH, I would habitually stay in the dark theatre many a late night, practicing on the piano.

Rumors had circulated through the company (staff mainly) about a ghost who had moved cymbals, broken set pieces, and many other devious little tricks. As always, I was skeptical. However, one night as I was playing "Day By Day" from Godspell, I heard high heels pacing in the lobby. This was at 3:AM, so I was a little concerned. I got up, went to the lobby, and saw no one.

After I came back in, the door closed behind me and I saw - out of the corner of my eye - a figure dart in between two rows of seats. I went and looked and saw nothing. But then, again out of the corner of my eye, I saw it move to a different row. I checked again... this happened four or five times before I shook it off and just began to play.

Getting into another song, the door into the lobby opened again and I heard the pacing of the high heels. I was, to say the least, quite concerned at this point. I went outside to get some air, came back in, and could still hear the pacing. CLICK... CLICK... CLICK... it was driving me mad! I went back out to the lobby and when I returned to the theatre proper, all the lights were on. I had only left the piano light on all night to save energy.

I packed it up and went home. I never told anyone about it, and never experienced it again, but this article brought back some scary memories.

Hi Grimace,

Wow -- I don't think I would have lasted as long as you did! I don't recall reading about any ghosts at the Mt. Washington Valley Theatre Company in North Conway. I will have to check this out. It sure is a spooky one!

Thank you for stopping by and sharing your fascinating and scary experience!!

Hi Anne,

Grimace is braver than I -- alone in a dark theater -- strange noises -- sounds like the start of a murder mystery. I would have been out of there so fast... I'd rather read about it from safely behind my computer screen. What a great story!

I hope you have a great Halloween, too! It's good to have you back online!!

It's interesting, because at the time I never felt as scared as I had after I left. Like I said before, I never told any company members.

It was just me doing my job. Come to think of it, I wasn't getting paid enough.

I think you're right -- you werent' getting paid enough -- if anything, you deserved extra pay!

The fact that you never told anyone makes me wonder if others have also had similar experiences and not told anyone!

It's a great story and I'm glad you shared it here! Thanks!
