A&P's theme is "old vs. young." It is also a coming of age story for the narrator, Sammy, whose preadolescent, chivalrous, romantic, idolizing runs up against the "dark" and "grey" world symbolized by Lendel. Sammy realizes that life is going to be hard for idealists because he's living in a world governed by sheep.
