Julie,

I'll be interested in your comments. I caught the final few minutes of the Oprah Book Club today and Ms. Morrison was there talking about the book. Despite her protestations that "Paradise" isn't difficult reading, I would disagree. It's a tough one to get through.

I am writing my thesis on motherhood and Toni Morrison, looking at how she portrays motherhood in her novels. Does anyone have a comment on how this subject is treated in "Paradise"?

» boldblonde - motherhood in Beloved

I'd have to take another look at Paradise to give you any info. there, but I assume you're including Beloved in your thesis? The relationships between Sethe and Beloved vs. Sethe and Denver fascinated me. In fact, I did a thesis in college on the matrilineal line in Beloved. Really interesting...

» nupp - motherhood in beloved

Thanks for reply from boldblonde. Yes, I am including Beloved in my thesis, in fact Beloved and The Bluest Eye were originally the novels by Toni Morrison that I concentrated on. I'm writing about black motherhood - influence by slavery, and differences "black feminism" vs "white feminism" because of the differences in their roles as women and mothers in 18th/19th cent.

Could you provide me with a brief character analysis of the main characters in Paradise? As well as how effective you thought they were. I had a difficult time reading the novel, and am not sure if I understood everything it had to offer.

» lomb78 - racism between black people

Do you know if there are some books or articles about classism or racism between black people?I'm actually writing my thesis on Paradise and Linden Hills by Gloria Naylor and I would like to develop this theme that appears to be central in both novels, but I could find criticism about racism only among black and white people! Thank you!

Thanks for replying .Actually i choose "beloved"as a research paper for research course in my university and im hopeful to have the best .Because i want to work on feminism approach in one woman writer who is familiar with slavery which can be severly in tight
with feminism.Ofcourse these two are define in two branches but we can tight them with each other
