Vonnetgut is really astounding. On the one hand he's an ex-soldier, and yet his common theme is pacifism. He represents a life in conflict, offering his life experiences though characters like Billy Pilgrim and Elliot Rosewater. My favorites (of those I've read) include

Although not Vonnegut's best, it's nevertheless entetaining, and as Karen notes, thought provoking. While Vonnegut claims "Timequake" is his final book, he shows that age hasn't cut heavily into his talents as a wry observer of life. I was just telling someone the other day that I haven't read Vonnegut in years. She works in a used bookstore and just got in a whole batch of his books. Maybe I'll have to pick up the new one instead of re-reading all the old stuff!Roxianne -- posted by RoxianneM » RobertP_2 - Vonnegut is a genius, but his unusual style always takes getting Vonnegut is a genius, but his unusual style always takes getting used to. There's a distinct rhythm to his writing, sometimes difficult to decipher, but definitely worth the effort. Maybe you even already have your answer, but "merde" means "pooh" in French. As far as Vonnegut goes, he was the first author I read (it was in school) and managed to set a standard for my preference in reading material. I'm a little less picky now, but for years there (outside of required reading) all I read and re-read was Vonnegut. I haven't read this one yet, but will be sure to now that I have read your review Robert. He's quirky and his style sometimes proves irritating, but he writes about the human condition with unerring accuracy and good humor, even when dealing with the most horrendous of topics. He has said that "Timequake" is his last book. Let's all hope he changes his mind. He still has much to say.
