Hi Robin,

You are missing some important ideas in online gaming. Already online gaming is a big industry but not in the sense that you describe. There has been a long history of MUDS and things of that sort, which have had many followers and participants. Lately major game designers have caught on to this trend and have started designing games to either be solely for the web (i.e. Ultima Online) or have strong features of multi-player ability via the Internet (i.e. Diablo and StarCraft). For these to work though you are tied to using a CD, which provides a lot of client support for the game. This makes it much more feasible to support a larger group of users since it reduces the strain on the server.

As a side note on your article...I fail to understand some of your comments on different things such as "ActiveX....is weak" since ActiveX makes use of major programming languages, it is just as "Strong" as those programming languages (i.e. C++, VB). It's major drawback is that it is tied to the Windows operating system and thereby not platform independent. JAVA on the other hand has poor graphic support and is slow due to it being an interpreted language (rather then pre-compiled, executable ready binary).

Hi David. Obviously you missed the point of my article. The whole idea was to create a game that could be played right in the user's browser, and made by ametuers. Diablo - type multiplayer games require heavy programming and are not cross-platform.

Microsoft's ActiveX is nice, but has no security features and so is not trusted. Java can be good with graphics, if you know how to use it indirectly.
