» renuka - my linux desktop is bigger than my monitor

hello friends
i know what iam going to ask now may be a very simple think but mind you iam having nightmares above this. friends i heard all the good things about the linux and having been fed up with windows i decided to switch to linux. Since i have never used unix or any of it clones and linux i decided to play it safe and install the linux on a separate partitions for some time and get to know about it first. I installed it on my computer and in the installation i choose the option of 24 bit graphics display. now after the istallation i find that all the graphics are too big for my monitor. the login box itself fills the entire monitor. once i login i can't do anything as all the dialog boxes and the windows are very big than my monitor. i don't know anything about the unix and will any of you please tell me how to correct this weierd thing. what are the thing i need to choose while installing linux.
any help will be greatly appreciated

» lipos - "About Linux" by renuka prasad

the following works for redhat.

b4 u install any type of linux, pls make sure that u know the specs of ur graphic card, monitor (horizontal and vertical freq, largest possible display etc..).
i used to encounter this problem. during ur installation, u have to do some trial and error configuration for ur X windows. if u r not planning to re-install ( which i don't think u will ), just type "XConfigurator" in "/etc".
the XConfigurator is the one u c when u install linux. choose custom for monitors esp if u don't have the specs for ur monitor. play around with the values for the display option ( where u can choose wat mode u want to run in eg 16bit 1024 X 768 etc ).
waiting for good news from u.....
good luck.

» Phillip_Keen - Smaller Desktop Size

To get a smaller desktop size try this key combination within xwindows, kde, or gnome:
CTRL ALT -. To go back to your large size (which I seriously doubt you will want to do this, use CTRL ALT + The - and + keys must be the ones in your numerical keypad. It works wonders!
