USC/UCLA doesn't get a lot of attention here in Big Ten country (go figure?). But I agree with you on Army/Navy. It's like Grambling vs. Southern -- no matter what the teams records are, fans can expect one tremendous game.

In order of intensity, by that, I mean absolute hatred between the teams, fans, regions. These games determine these people's entire year...not just football, the whole year. Can't beat 'em. College Football at its best (or worst depending on your point of view). I live for games like this. This is why College Football is the greatest sports competition in the country (in my humble opinion).

1. Alabama vs. Auburn
2. Arizona State vs. Arizona
3. Michigan vs. Ohio State
4. Florida State vs. Florida
5. Texas vs. Texas A&M

A lot of it also depends on what part of the country you're in. Here in Ohio, OSU-Michigan is tops and Arizona-ASU doesn't draw much heat. Bama-Auburn is big no matter where you are.

Florida v. FSU
No question. All the hype, talk, and one hell of a game. You may win once but don't think you can win twice in the same season.

» GKCruey - Florida Tennessee, recently at least...

I think in recent years the Florida-Tennessee rivalry has developed a lot of emotion and has had more impact on the national title race than Florida-FSU.

A few others that haven't been mentioned, in part I suppose because they haven't had much effect on the top 10 ranking recently and in part because of the regional nature of the question:

Georgia-Ga. Tech
West Virginia-Va. Tech
West Virginia-Pittsburgh (the backyard brawl)
Army-Navy

Those games are intense if you're connected in some way to them...

Hey, it doesn't get a lot of respect but this sure is an up-and-coming rivalry. They're the nations two largest religious schools, and this decade they've put on a great deal of nailbiters and entertaining games. Say what you want, but this is a game I'll be watching for years to come.

WVU-Marshall could become a great one if they played each other more. But my personal pick is still OSU-Michigan. The pure emotion that goes into this one and the hype that surrounds it up north here makes it a classic year in and year out. Only problem is the outcome is starting to get predictable.

So which rivalry game was the best this year? Virginia-VT and Georgia-Georgia Tech were great games. I didn't see much of Carolina-NC State but that must have been a real doozy. Thoughts?

» pcmccormick - NDSU/UND

You guys are looking in the wrong division for the best rivalries in football. In DI, the teams fluctuate so much that there is no real long running rivalries. On the other hand, NDSU/UND (according to an ESPN special) is the longest running rivalry in college football. I think it's the best too. Also, in DIII, St. John's U/St. Thomas is a very very good rivalry as well.

» 166094 - rivalries

it's time to get a real rivalry into the discussion. one where the teams are actually playing for something when they meet each other. i'm surprised it hasn't been brought up already in light of the game that was played this year.
