» jerrib - Hi Renie

Your photos always add so much to your articles.

I have never been to this part of Missouri, so I was glad to read about your trip. I love trees of any kind and especially loved seeing them at Allred Lake. The Cyprus trees remind me of Mangrove trees in Florida.

Thanks for the tour. I've missed your articles for a while and am happy to be back.

Hi Wendy, so true, we humans have been very careless when it comes to nature. Hopefully, we learned our lesson, but I don't know. Come check out the colors in the Ozarks from your small plane. I promise you won't be dissapointed! Thanks much for coming by.

Hi Jerri, so great to see you back online again! I hope you're settled in now, and enjoying your new surroundings. Trees are wonderful, aren't they? I can't imagine living where there are few trees. Thank you for coming by, Jerri. I'm happy you're back!

» kcruver - Trees with knees!

Wow, that was beautiful Renie. I love the visual of all those animals coming to nourish themselves in the swamps. I sure wish those parakeets still existed; that would really be something to see. I've never been to a swamp. I'm so used to seeing them re-created on soundstages for all those 30's horror movies I watch. Now I've got a different, more vibrant picture to hold in my mind when I hear the word "swamp". Nice writing--until next time! (Hey how's the fall going down there anyway?)

Hi Kendahl! Yes, swamps are actually quite beautiful, not at all like the depictions in those old movies. Very special ecosystems that are being lost in great numbers. Hey, thanks for coming by, my friend. Fall is progressing very nicely in the Ozarks, and we should peak around the end of October. My favorite time of the year. Take care! Renie

» Lynford_D_Turner - Allred Lake

Hi Renie I've been all around that area many times, but, I never gave any thought to what the lake looked like. Therefore, I've never seen it. I wonder what the whole area would look like if the swamp was still there, beautiful I guess. Also, think of all the soybeans, cotton and other crops that come from the old lake bed. Nice story Renie, I'll have to see it sometime. Lynford D.Turner

Hi Lynford, yes, the old swamp bed is pretty fertile, I guess. If you're ever in the area, I hope you visit Allred Lake. And thank you for visiting here. Hope all is well with you and yours. Renie

» scuba_steve - Wonderful article

Renie,

I loved your article. It is amazing in a very sad way that so little of the original 2 million acres of this ecosystem has been preserved. From your descriptions, Allred Lake sounds like a beautiful place to visit and I hope to see it someday. There are many Cypress swamps in the Carolinas but just like Missouri much of the original swampland has been destroyed. I just learned of the extinct Carolina Parakeet a year ago and I find it sad to think of how this beautiful and once plentiful species (which was also plentiful in the Carolinas)was hunted to extinction. A part of me still clings to the hope that some of these birds still exist in some remote location elsewhere on earth though I know that this is extremely unlikely. Thank you for writing such a great article. You make several important points that should make us all think seriously about how humans have effected the natural environment.

Hi Steve, yes, I found it very sad that so small an area remains from the great lowland swamps of Missouri. And the Carolina Parakeets fate is sad as well. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were some of these birds left? But I doubt there are. However, the book I recommend at the end of the article gives hope of bringing back some lost species through cloning!

I'm happy you enjoyed the article. Thanks so much for the nice words, and visit. Renie
