» silvan - A story about my birth

Your article brought to mind a story about when I was born in 1964. My mother had had trouble getting things her own way when my brothers were born in the 50s, partly because of health problems and partly because she was young and afraid to speak her mind. When I was born she was almost 31 and determined to do things right. She wanted to breastfeed, she wanted to keep me in the room with her overnight, and also keep the live plant someone had given her. The older nurses on the day shift resisted her all the way, but reluctantly agreed not to take me to the nursery.

In those days, it was conventional wisdom that green plants depleted oxygen from the air. Every time Mom woke up, she found the plant had been moved to the hall. The nurses wouldn't come when she buzzed for help, leaving her alone to clamber off the high bed by herself, whether it was to retrieve the plant from the hall, or me from my bassinet. Mom and I were both healthy, so she was undeterred.

Fortunately, the night nurses were three young Irish women who had been midwives, and they thought my mom was terrific! I was Mom's last child, so she was pleased that she finally succeeded in breastfeeding. And keeping that plant! She probably didn't know that plants remove indoor pollutants, but she always believed they were good things to keep around. I wish I had my mother's green thumb with houseplants.

What a nice story, Silvan. She was bent on keeping both you and the plant! Perhaps, your love of nature began with that plant? It's hard to believe they used to think plants depleted oxygen from the air. Thank you for the lovely story, Silvan. Hope you are feeling much better by now. Renie

Hi Kathy, so glad you popped in! I love plants, and have quite a few, myself. Besides my sunroom, many other windows are adorned with plants. A California gardener, eh? Lucky you! If you ever need help embedding pictures into your articles, just give me a holler. Or send me an email. smile I bought a digital camera a few months ago, and I love it! Thank you for coming by. Hi Renie, sorry I'm late! We've been soo sick. Flu and strep, and misery all around. But, we finally are on the mend, and Mandy is going to school today.

I loved the article. Your sunroom is delightful. Can I come and camp out in it? LOL. I love plants, too, and have several throughout the house. Mandy has a terrarium that she made herself. Your doves are beautiful! It was a joy to read this article. Thank you, Renie. Hope you are feeling great. See you again, soon. Love, Kim

Hi Kim! Oh dear, sorry to hear you've been sick. I hope you and Mandy are both all well now. I'm so glad you enjoyed the article, and yes, you can come and camp out here, anytime! smile Terrariums are so nice. I'm sure Mandy enjoyed building it and seeing to it that it thrives. Allthough, one doesn't have to do too much to a terrarium, once it's finished. Thank you for visiting, Kim. I'm always glad to see you! Take care. I'll be in touch. Renie

Really nice article. I do articles for Decorating W/Feng Shui and it teaches us that plants not oly provide a lot of positive energy to the
room, they absorb negative energy, and when placed
in a corner they keep the energy or ch'i from getting stuck there. These are just some of the
reasons for advocating the use of plants in Feng Shui. I'll look forward to checking out the rest
of you articles. Our sites rather compliment each other. Thanks for the uplifting article.
