Well, probably a lot of people haven't either, so you're not alone. I have always liked the smaller, humbler creatures of nature. Thanks so much for visiting. Hope you're doing well. Renie -- posted by Renie_Burghardt » jerrib - Hearing the Frogs are Back gives me hope. We used to hear tons of them singing in the spring. It's been a long time, now.We do have a tree frog now and then that comes up on our deck (I think one lives under it). They have such a loud croak for such a little frog! I just heard birds outside my window, so I ran and put up a birdhouse I've been sluggish getting up. We have several out. Anyway, sure did enjoy this. You make every subject a song to sing about! It's been very spring-like in the Ozarks, and last night I even heard the little peepers. I stood on the deck, listening to them, and felt elated. And I'm sure, some little bird will make that birdhouse her home in the near future. Thanks for coming by, Jerri. You always make me feel so good by saying the nicest things! Tons of information that I'd never heard of before, and appreciate you telling me about! We get frogs and toads here, and the kids have a great time trying to catch them! Oh, to be a kid again! I'm too slow for that kind of thing now! Thanks for the great article--wonderfully written by my fave writer! Very best wishes, -- posted by vix1 » Dubh_Sidhe - Frogs et al If one wants to learn of these, your article is a great teacher. Thanks for a great informative read, Renie. Some time ago, I was walking my doggie and he came upon a dead toad. He grabbed it in his teeth and would not let go. A couple of weeks later, I found a terrible, disgusting growth in his neck just down from mouth corner. The Vet surgically removed a deep-rooted, Whether it was toad-related or not is not known, but I will always suspect the relationship. Yuk! Great nature sketch, as always... -- posted by Dubh_Sidhe » Lynn - Hmmm... Hi Renie, it is nice to know I am not the only one to develop an interest in toads & frogs. Although I didn't name the toad that lived in my backyard among the herb garden, I did end up building a tiny stair case for it. It had fallen into the window well for my basement window, and try as it could, it was not able to jump back out. So... I decided that I should stack rocks up to make steps so that it could easily get out. It worked! The window well was a great place for it to catch bugs and toad seemed happy to hop up and down the little set of stairs. I'm hoping to see "toad" again this spring. Thanks for a great article.-- posted by Lynn » Renie_Burghardt - Re: Frogs and Toads In response to message posted by vix1:Victoria, you're so nice! Thanks so much for the visit and kind words. Appreciate it much! Renie -- posted by Renie_Burghardt » Renie_Burghardt - Re: Frogs et al In response to message posted by Dubh_Sidhe:Hi Virginia, hmm, well, I have handled toads, and haven't gotten any warts or anything. Usually, if a live toad is seized, they do secrete a poisonous substance, and whatever is trying to eat the toad, will spit it out. But if the toad was already dead, I don't think the secretion was released. But, I don't blame you for associating the growth with the incident. Hope your doggie is all okay now. Thanks so much for coming by. Hope things are going well for you. Renie -- posted by Renie_Burghardt » Renie_Burghardt - Re: Hmmm... In response to message posted by Lynn:Hi Lynn! How nice to see you here this morning. I like the idea of the little toad staircase. Yes, and toads do catch lots of bugs. I'm hoping my toad will be back this spring, and patrol the garden again. The way I discovered they like dog food is when I saw a toad, that had hopped on the porch, actually dining on the leftover dog food! This is true! So then I just took some bits of it to the garden, where my toad Fred was, and he enjoyed it. I guess we animal freaks do these kinds of things! Hehe. Thank you for visiting this morning, Lynn. Stay dry now. Renie -- posted by Renie_Burghardt » oma_carma - Toads and Frogs Great information on our little insectfriends. It is just my thoughts, but I think the drought we have had the last couple of years is the reason toads and frogs are not seen as much as they once were. I enjoy your writings and your pictures. Keep up the good work Renie. -- posted by oma_carma « Previous 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Next » Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
