» Zanzi - This article is very challenging... ...but in a good way! I agree that children's individuality must be respected and fostered....respecting children as individuals who are in control of themselves (not to be coerced), and trusting them to look out for their own safety My question, I guess, would be how to live this out practically, especially in the inner cities, where society is counting on the fact that children are not trusted to look out for their own safety? -- posted by Zanzi » msaraann - Re: This article is very challenging... In response to message posted by Zanzi:I think that the continuum concept is a good model of how children might be reared in conditions ideal for humans. Since most of us don't live in ideal conditions, we have to adapt and make the most of our actual conditions. We can live communally with extended family or with other families. We can get to know our neighbors. I think children should be given as much freedom as is safe so that they can follow their interests (this is how they learn most effectively.) Since many of us can't stay home with our children, we should choose cafefully a substitute caregiver who will care for our children in a way that supports our parenting practices. Essentially, we have to follow our instincts and do the best we can. There is a continuum concept email list where parents around the world offer support to one another in parenting and living based on the continuum concept. http://www.continuum-concept.org/forum/i... -- posted by msaraann » biogardener - Family Focus Event Thanks for submitting this article to the Family Focus event.
