It is still possible that you will be able to get the flu vaccine this season at the usual cost. The news hype has caused an early rush and has motivated a few who never could be convinced to even consider taking it in the past.

If you cannot get it and an epidemic occurs, you have good options. First, the odds are that there won't be an epidemic and if there is it has a good chance of being from a new viral starain anyway. Second, there are medications that are very effective in reducing the severity of the viral illness if taken early. These are prescription medications that are, at least so far, readily available. The names are Relenza and Tamiflu and your health provider can give you guidance as to when they are indicated. My guess is that there will be a run on these too, thanks to news hysteria. For you, knowing that you have ready access to antibiotic treatment for a respiratory infection is something to review with your health provider's office.

Wash hands when out at the grocery store etc. and after. Don't touch your mouth, nose, and eyes if your hands have not been washed after contacts.

Above all, be informed and stay calm.

I had flu one year and my doctor gave me Amantadine, which is similar to the ones you have mentioned and acts as an antiviral for flu. Amantadine is used to treat Parkinson's Disease, but is very effective for the respiratory infections caused by influenza A virus. These are the drug types I mentioned in several posts back, but did not provide their names. They can make one feel better and lessen the severity of flu. Amantadine sure lessened my symptoms. An ad for these pops up to the left every now and then.

» biogardener - Old-standing problem

This problem of out-of-control drug prices in the US is totally political and is of long standing. No US president has tried to attack the legislation which gives pharmaceutical industries the power to keep prices higher in the US than anywhere else in the world. This problem has been examined in many Canadian investigative reports, so Canadians probably understand the problem better than Americans. The only American show which I know of to have tackled the problem is 60 Minutes.

Did you know that the American government spends twice as much money on health per capita than Canada or any European country? Yet in Canada and those European countries, everyone has easy access to health care free of charge and in America, some people have to mortgage their homes to get health care. All that extra money is going to the pharmaceutical industry, the medical liability insurance, or to lawyers. It isn't going to proper health care. And the proposed new legislation is not going to remedy that. It will make it worse.

I thank God every day that the US would not allow my family to immigrate to the US. The cut-off age in the 1950s was 50, and my father was 55. So we came to Canada instead.

Hi,

I beg to differ with you regarding the pneumonia vaccine. My husband who has diabetes and asthma received that shot when he was about 60. He became very ill for nearly a week. And he could hardly move his arm for the same time period.

» biogardener - The Cupboard Is Bare

Well, the cupboard is bare. So many Americans have been getting flu shots in Canada, that the clinics have run out of them. The two pharmaceutical companies who supply Canada with the vaccine have let us know that there is not more to be had, and it taked 6 months to produce it. So this is it, folks.

Traute,

I had not heard this. I just got my flu shot on Friday. I have no choice but to get it. My doctor insists since I am a diabetic. I have never been sick from a flu shot, but have heard that some people suffer side effects. I don't think it is because of the shot. Lots of people react differently to different meds.

For anyone who has an chronic illness, I highly recommend getting a flu shot. It may not help, but it certainly can't hurt. If the flu shot makes you ill and it is a very mild dose of the flu, then how sick would you be if you got the actual flu? Food for thought.

» Tom - Influenza Injection

I got my flu shot a week ago last Saturday, here in the good old U. S. of A. It cost me a measly $30 which included the doctor's office visit. I didn't suffer any reactions or after effects.

I've been hearing that they are coming out with 2.5 million vials of the vaccine after January 1st in time for the peak flu season in January-February.

» Minnie - Warning against the flu shot

Traute, last night I heard from a Ph.D. that the ingredients in the flu shot can certainly hurt you. She recommended to look at the list and also the side effects.

She also said that the serum is now made in England, and one cannot sue a company in England.

Another thing that a Neuropath Physician said was that Salk would not let his kids get vaccinated because he thought it would kill them.

I haven't checked the authenticity of the claims, but it's enough for me to spend some time searching for answers before getting the flu shot.

Maybe the answers lie in starting healthy habits to increase our immunity? It's vital to keep your blood PHs alkaline and that will help minimize any bad effects of the shot.

My latest article at http://www.suite101.com/article.cfm/3830... gives some tips to regain our health.

» biogardener - Even then . . .

Even if the flu shot did not do any harm, it won't do any good either, because the viruses against which it is supposed to protect you were chosen three years ago, and the ones which are attacking people right now are new strains which did not exist three years ago. That is the way it has been for years now. Every year we see new flu strains appearing. It will be another three years before a shot against this years strains can be developed, and by that time, the strains will have mutated into new ones. So there is no way the shots can protect anyone.

I have hesitated to state it that bluntly until every one else had his say. I agree with Minnie. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. I am one of the most vulnerable people because of the weekness in my lungs which I developed in hard times. I weigh my choices very carefully.
