Of Night Owls and Early BirdsRead the article this discussion is about
This archived discussion is "read only". » biogardener - same here And I used to start teaching my university evening classes at 8 p.m., my birth hour. I couldn't hack it and got them changed to 7:30 p.m. That gave me enough time to say "Guten Abend" to my class before my brain would switch to neutral. I would have preferred to teach them at 7:30 a.m. Actually, my slower students considered me a better teacher when I was half asleep. When I was awake, my pace took everyone's breath away.-- posted by biogardener » LadyB - Thanks. Ah, Traute, another beautiful article, my dear. Fascinating. I guess I am a special case as I was a controlled INDUCED baby! Where does THAT leave me! My older sister was born in an hour and a half and the doc figured they'd need a catcher's mitt for me, so THEY chose my 'birthday'!) I spent the vast majority of my life believing I was born at 10:35 AM, which would be logical, show up at 8am, shot in the arm, baby arrives at 10:35. I was SHOCKED to see my original birth certificate and there, in original fountain-pen ink was 10:35 PM.But YOUR take on this makes perfect sense! I have always been the craziest of morning people. My utterly natural time to bounce awake is 5:30 AM. I simply cannot start complex projects at night. No way. (and I used to teach in the evening too.....7:30-9:30...since it was Herbal "SHOWTIME" I got in there and DID it, but once I got back home I was toast beyond belief!) My partner says one of his great pleasures is watching me fall asleep. I drift off soundly in a matter of minutes (of course part of that comes from working outdoors all day long for a living). He struggles to fall asleep and then can't seem to STAY asleep, but every afternoon immediately after lunch he snoozes right out. VERY interesting. As for feline companions, that chapter is closed for me now. I developed a life-threatening allergy to them about 3 years ago. But they used to be my favorite friends, and yes, they have this sleeping thing down to somewhere between a science and true art form. Lady B, Weeds and Wild Things Cold Spring, New York -- posted by LadyB » CarolWallace - Traute, if the birth hour idea holds for cats, mine were born a Traute, if the birth hour idea holds for cats, mine were born about the same time I was. They are usually up 'til 3 of 4 when I got to bed, and then they come sneaking into the bedroom. Years ago they had a territorial war - one got the bed, the other sleeps under it. When I struggle out in the morning (more like noon, usually) the one under thebed slinks out sleepily and follows me downstairs to the foodbowl. But the one on the bed usually sleeps in just a bit more.Talk about teaching at the wrong hour - my first few years here they had me teaching a law class at 8 a.m. - which was a disaster. I also teach advertising, and for some reason they never scheduled that until around 11, which was a bit more bearable. Then once the registrar slipped and gave me an 8 a.m. ad class. To my great surprise it was a smashing success. My braion, unable to wake up and exercise the usual control, allowed some amazingly creative things to slip out. <img src="http://www.suite101.com/userfiles/79/rhubarb.gif" alt="rheum" align=left> -- posted by CarolWallace » biogardener - I have no idea when any of my cats were born. I have never gott I have no idea when any of my cats were born. I have never gotten a cat on purpose. They somehow end up here and adopt me.Dusty always goes to sleep right after she stuffs herself. Cats, however, do not sleep soundly like people and they do not sleep very long at a time. When they do sleep at night, they usually are up several times. Some of them do some strenuous exercise at that time. The Siamese cats I have know did their laps up and down the hall at exactly 1:30 a.m. every night. And those cats did not know each other. When we forgot to close the keyboard, our Russian blue used to play the piano at 1:30 a.m. sharp. Dusty sits by the door at 1:30 whining, hoping that someone will take her outside. I get the impression that all my cats are at their peak performance at 1:30 a.m. -- posted by biogardener Please follow the guidelines set forth in the Suite101 Posting Etiquette when adding to the discussion. |
