NFP From a Non-Believer’s Point of ViewRead the article this discussion is about

» ttcweb - Re: Opinions? Gee, what can I say? A great article that shows the thought process involved in choosing a new method of contraception. I can say that many that hear NFP think of the Rythm method (which is well known for the 'surprise' pregnancy, my son included). However after being introduced to Fertility Charting when I was trying to get pregnant (years ago now) I realized just how effective it would be at preventing pregnancy and decided that it would be the best method for me. After I conceived using the fertility charting method (and later lost the baby) I understood how easy it was to chart all my fertility signs in just a few minutes on a daily basis. Now, years later, my husband and I have been using FAM (Fertility Awareness Method) to avoid pregnancy and have done so successfully. Would I ever change my birth control method? Only if I found myself in a new relationship (I would add condoms). I know exactly when I ovulate, I know when ovulation has been delayed due to illness or travel, and I also always know when to expect my period. I don't have to worry about side effects or drug interactions if I am ill and need to take medications. For me, it has been the perfect option that I didn't know existed until I wanted to get pregnant. Great article Kath!!! Best Wishes! -- posted by ttcweb » angelique31 - Re: Opinions? I don't believe that NFP is for everyone but I doubt very sincerely that I would be able to use anything else. I began using the Sympto-Thermal Method of NFP just before I got married in March, 2000. I have never had an opps and I don't think I came close to one either.NFP is not easy--it is very true that women have to obstain just when they feel most like making love. But it is wonderful knowing that now that I am going to start trying to have a child, I don't have to wait 3 months to a year to have my body recover from the chemicals and drugs I have put into it. Part of the reason that NFP statistics are so low is that it can be used for achieving or avoiding pregnancy. If someone is really charting correctly, (and I tend to be optimistic and think that most women can figure out how to chart) they know exactly when they are fertile and infertile. This means that many of the people who get pregnant on NFP, very probably knew that they could get pregnant if they had intercourse on that particular day and chose to do it anyway. NFP is not very forgiving. There is a reason for those rules! I think that where you are is a great start and that as you go on and learn more and get more comfortable with your body you will find that it matters less and less that when you tell the doctor that you are using NFP he or she puts down NO BIRTH CONTROL METHOD. And it becomes so easy it is like second nature. It brings you closer to your husband as you come up with alternative methods to become intimate when you can't have intercourse. As I said, I will never go back! -- posted by angelique31
