Natural Family Planning: What it Is. . . and Isn'tRead the article this discussion is about

» Trula - Hi! I too am excited about learning more about this. I am 29 and had my first child at 17, and then 2 little guys 5 and 8 years after. So after 12 years of off and on artificial birth control such as the pill and the shot (which did not work for me), I am ready to look for something else. I will be 30 next year and from what I read the artificial hormones are not good for women in their 30's anyway.-- posted by Trula » jancy - Natural Family Planning Thanks for sharing your experience of NFP. Although we have no need of NFP now, as my husband has had a vasectomy, I actually used it to FALL pregnant - and as a result I know exactly when my two children were conceived.I think NFP CAN be a viable alternative. The only problem I have with it is that I would have had to abstain when I most felt like being loving! (Unless I wanted to conceive of course). Not sure if all women are like this but it is certainly my experience. Knowing what I know now about the Pill, I don't like the idea of using it as contraception. As a concerned Christian (not a Catholic), I believe in the sanctity of life from the moment of conception. I used to think the Pill just prevented conception. Now I've learned that conception often still occurs but is unable to implant in the uterine wall due to the chemical influences of the Pill. That, to me, is not acceptable. I'm glad we've completed our family and don't have to worry about this stuff any more! I actually used a type of NFP to fall pregnant called the "Billings Method" and involves checking your vaginal mucus for fertile signs, rather than taking your temperature. Seems to be a very accurate guide and easy to follow. Welcome to the Suite! Janet Camilleri -- posted by jancy » StCatherine - Welcome Hi! I'm Catholic and appreciate you taking the time and effort to do this topic. You are off to a good start - Nice first article and good set of links.Welcome to Suite101.com. -- posted by StCatherine » butterfly8 - Re: YEAH! Glad to see this topic! Thank you, Lara, for your warm welcome! I've been enjoying your site, too. Thanks, especially, for the recipe for sunscreen which I will be using on my very fair-skinned baby this summer. Also, I appreciate the link!-- posted by butterfly8 » butterfly8 - Re: Hi! Hi Trula! Congratulations on your three little ones and your interest in NFP. It just might be the safe, effective "something else" you're looking for. I plan to provide the information you'll need to get started in future articles. In the meantime, the links also provide excellent "how to" information. I look forward to talking with you more!-- posted by butterfly8 » butterfly8 - Re: Natural Family Planning Hi Janet! My experience mirrors yours -- NFP requires abstinence precisely when desire is highest. It's something that anyone considering NFP needs to think about. A little "creativity" can usually solve the dilemma, but it may make NFP a stressful method for some couples. Thanks, too, for your point about the Pill -- something else we need to think about in considering our choices! I use the sympto-thermal method, but I know the Billings Method works for many. I've never heard the expression "fall pregnant." Is it Australian, or just a term I haven't come across yet? As a fan of young adult literature, I loved your Harry Potter article. :-) -- posted by butterfly8 » butterfly8 - Re: Welcome Kathryn, thank you for your encouraging welcome! Please stick around -- I look forward to your assistance with the Catholic dimension of NFP.P.S. I look forward to checking out your Louisiana site! -- posted by butterfly8
