Do you have any tips for finding Native American ancestors of white families in the South East?

If mixed families didn't successfully hide their native heritage during the 1800's, they would have faced discrimination and hardship.
Even in the 1920's Census takers were ordered to change Indian to Mulatto or Colored on the census forms.
That surely must make it harder to fill in a family tree now?
